Air- Le Voyage Dans La Lune

“Le Voyage Dans La Lune” (A Trip to the Moon) by Georges Melies, is considered to be the most techincally innovative film up to that time. The 1902 black and white film was a social commentary about the scientific method as well as a remarkably entertaining story. The plot is fairly simple- a group of people go to the moon, only to find it is inhabited by a little green man. When Melies first released the film, it was only in black/white, but, like many of his other films, he hand colored every frame of the 16-minute film. This hand-colored version was, until 1993, a secret. It has been rediscovered, and restored (after tremendous disintegration), and re-released in May, 2011.

Who better to score the soundtrack of a long lost french movie about the moon than France’s very own psychadelic dream-pop group, Air? Who, in 1998 released the album “Moon Safari,” and introduced a new genre of spacey music synthesis. After scoring the soundtrack, Air decided to release a full length album, inspired by their work with Melies’ film.

The album, not sounding too different from their past works, has an unusual focus for an Air album- that is, it tells a coherent story from start to finish. So sit back, relax and take a trip to the moon with Air.

The album was officially released TODAY! (Feb. 7 ) and can be listened to for free here.
