Death Grips – Exmillitary
When most people hear Sacramento, CA, they think of Arnold Schwarzenagger, rich suburbia and wine-tasting, and not poverty, drug use or violent crime. Enter Death Grips, a raw new hip-hop duo that reminds middle/upper class America that poverty is real and everywhere. Reminiscent of the 1980’s punk scene in attitude, and easily comparable to Tyler, the Creator in musical style, Death Grips delivers an extremely raw, abrasive sound, that perplexes and alienates the listener, but compels him/her to want more. Once you get past the fact that this album sounds completely different from anything you’ve ever heard, you can realize the complexity of the beats and hidden intellect of the lyrics.
You might recognize the sample from “Spread Eagle Cross the Block” as “Rumble” by Link Wray from the movie Pulp Fiction.
